Log In. Sub Culture. A bad sign. Or maybe… the food truck manager just wanted customers to focus on their cornucopian menu of treats? As we placed our orders for two bobas and an ice cream, I failed to ask about the prices. How bad could the bill really be? Once all the products were in our hands, I found out.

At what price would I have refused to pay? I glumly handed over my credit card, and got even glummer when we discovered that the flavor was mediocre, too. Still, the experience got me thinking. Most people would blame the free market for the bad result.

I, in contrast, blame myself. The absence of posted prices was a red flag. Since there were other trucks in sight, I probably should have just walked on by.

If consumers place orders without checking prices, then cough up whatever vendors ask after the fact, the outcome will be poor. Unless reputation matters, which it almost always does. So what went wrong in DC? My best story is that this food truck consciously targets not just tourists, but distracted tourists.

Tourists who are paying attention will snub the truck with no posted prices. So what customers are left? When You Will Not Stampede Me released, my friend Ilya Somin presented some thoughtful criticism on the Reason website.

Here is my belated response. But I think he and some other advocates of non-conformism may underrate some key arguments for—limited, but still substantial—conformity. One is that conformism often makes good sense on questions you don't care much about. For example, I'm skeptical that moving towards gender-neutral language is a good idea, or that it does much to reduce sexism.

But I don't actually care much about the terminology in question, and therefore usually go along with majority intellectual trends on these matters. I figure it's better to conform and thereby avoid unnecessarily alienating people, than to make a stand on a hill I don't care much about.

Situations like this come up often. But in any given society, there is a fairly short list of issues that others take very seriously. Given this high bar, how often will you coincidentally be indifferent or nearly so?

A more substantial problem is the possibility that some widely held norms and traditions might embody valuable wisdom, even if modern non-conformists don't understand why. This, of course, is the longstanding "Burkean conservative" argument for adhering to tradition. The standard critique of Burkean conservatism is that history shows many longstanding, widely accepted traditions were horrifically wrong: slavery, serfdom, the subordination of women, persecution of religious dissenters, and more.

This litany undermines the case for unthinking adherence to tradition, as a general rule. But there might be some categories of norms and traditions that deserve more deference than others… [S]ocial norms that emerge from market processes or civil society are more likely to be well-founded.

Please try again later. Verified Purchase. I bought this nearly four years ago and it has been frequently used I last used it just this weekend. It has made many appearances at family get togethers as well as on couples nights where my friends and I play in teams.

It seems suitable for most ages. I enjoyed playing this four years ago as an 18 year old and still enjoy playing it now with family members who are in their sixties! The game is designed a lot differently to other trivial pursuits I have played. On each turn you roll the dice to choose a category e.

g entertainment, sports and leisure and then you get to pick out of a choice of 4 topics e. Harry Potter, Japan. The betting element is a really good twist as not only does it keep you entertained when it isn't your turn, but you can gain chips from predicting whether the other players will answer correctly or incorrectly, using the chips you win to buy segments.

However, you can play the game without it if you wish to do so. The only issue with the item is that the envelope used to display the topics is a bit fiddly, sometimes it takes a little while to get the card in to the holder.

Played all the trivial pursuit games and this one adds a new twist with a good range of questions, subjects. Half of the chips missing and many of the cards were stained. Bought this as a Christmas present for my son. When we played it on Christmas day the questions seemed to feature lots of Canadian references, e.

lots of questions about ice hockey and basketball, Canadian tv and even Gordon Lightfoot! Although still enjoyable to play it made for quite a lot of wrong answers. On checking the box we discovered it is Canadian in origin, not sure if this is made clear on the sales page. Overall, the concept of the game made for a new twist on trivial pursuit and I suppose it will increase our knowledge of all things Canadian the more we play it!

I bought this game for my partner as we had played it with some friends previously, he was going away and I thought it would be a great present for his birthday. It arrived on time and I wrapped it and gave it to him to open.

When they came to play it and have a game it transpired the instructions were in German - although the game itself was the English version. Basically I was accused of buying 2nd rate goods because of this!!

Saw the funny side, but bit embarrassing!! Great game though - got a copy of the English instructions from some friends. Many thanks.

One person found this helpful. I bought this as an update for our old Genus edition as it was ludicrously out of date the final straw was a question about Indian cities which had all since been renamed. I was initially sceptical about this new betting format but it works very well.

Even those who were initially insistent that buying wedges was cheating relented after they'd failed their 3rd entertainment question in a row. This is now very much the preferred format in our family.

It is also nice having everyone involved every go without one player taking 10 minutes as they work their way around the board as can happen in the traditional version. You no longer have to commit an entire evening to it, a game with 6 people takes just over an hour.

The range of questions is excellent, a game my family had over Christmas had an age range of over 60 years and no one felt disadvantaged as the younger players use to with the Genus edition. The negatives that docked it a star: Some of the questions have extremely tenuous links to either the card theme or category The card holder can be quite fiddly, ours got it's first tear after just 2 games.

Something which you will have very strong feelings on when it happens to you: With the games I've played The first person to get all 6 wedges has yet to be the winner.

There is usually a card which stands out as a topic you don't know anything about which allows other players to rapidly increase their chips by betting the maximum on you getting it wrong to the point where someone else buys their way to victory.

However it works both ways and there will be games when you buy your final question to win and feel delighted with your strategic cunning. This new angle on TP is a breath of fresh air.

Whoever you are playing with they have the chance of winning as at the same time as people answer questions for wedges you also get to bet on the likelihood of them knowing the answer. If you can't answer questions you can spend your winnings to buy a wedge!

For the first time ever I found myself almost defeated by my kids! Fantastic way to play. If you've ever started a game of trivial pursuit only to find yourself still playing three hours later, this is the one for you.

Perfect for me, as I'm terrible at sport. And geography. Quick to learn how to play too :. See more reviews. Top reviews from other countries.
