A tournament buy-in allots a pre-determined amount of tournament chips, and the tournament ends when one player collects all of the chips in play.

The world's most popular poker games task players with making the best five-card poker hand using a combination of hole cards and community cards. Hole cards stay concealed throughout the hand, only visible to the player holding them. Community cards are dealt to the board face up and can be used by all players.

The only time hole cards are exposed is at showdown, when players turn their cards face up to determine which player has the best hand. Blinds and antes go into the main pot before a hand begins. Every time an active player bets, those chips go in the middle and increase the size of the pot.

The main pot can only increase if participating players still have more chips they can put in the pot. When three or more players are in a hand, and at least one player is all-in, the remaining players then start competing for the side pot.

If an all-in player can't put chips in the side pot, they can't win that pot, even if they hold the best hand at showdown. Whichever player has the best hand out of the remaining players wins the side pot. After the under-the-gun player acts, the action moves clockwise around the table, with each player getting the same opportunity to call, raise, or fold.

The player in the big blind is last to act unless further action needs to close behind the big blind. In this case, our active player folds, and the next three players also fold. This brings the action to the player in the cutoff position, one seat to the right of the button.

The cutoff player decides to call, and the action moves to the button, who folds. In our example, the big blind calls, and the first round of betting is complete.

In any round of betting after the flop, the small blind gets to act first if they're still in the hand. If not, the first player to the left that's still active gets to make the first bet. The dealer puts out the first three of five face up community cards, known as the "flop". After the flop, the small blind, or first still-active player to the left, can either check or bet.

In our example, the big blind player is first to act. Let's say this player checks, which passes the action to the under-the-gun player.

The under-the-gun player folds. The action now moves to the cutoff, who makes the call. If the cutoff folds, the hand is over, and the big blind wins without the hand going to a showdown. The dealer then puts out the final community card, known as the river, and the final betting round takes place.

The cutoff also checks, and the two players move to the showdown. The player with the best hand wins according to standard poker hand rankings. The act of all remaining players showing their hole cards is known as the showdown. What exactly does the "No-Limit" part of No-Limit Texas Hold'em mean?

No-Limit Texas Hold'em stands as just one of many games in the world of poker, however. Not all games use no-limit betting rules. Pot-Limit Omaha , aka PLO, takes its place as the second-most popular poker game in the world.

Games like 7 Card Stud, Limit Hold'em, and Razz, use limit betting rules. Let's dive into the differences among no-limit, pot-limit, and limit betting structures in poker.

The term "no-limit" seems simple enough. In any no-limit poker game, players can bet all of their chips at any time. Most no-limit games use a system of blinds and a button, and for more on that system check out the "Blinds, button, and antes" tab above. The cards are dealt, and the player directly to the left of the big blind starts the preflop betting round.

At any time during a hand, any player can go all-in. Note that the maximum amount for an all-in equals the amount of chips in front of a player when the hand starts. The no-limit betting structure leads to some of the most dramatic situations you'll see at a poker table.

They might even call hoping to bluff you later in the hand — an absolute disaster for you. Thus, you'll find that when making a continuation bet, it's best to ensure that your post-flop bet is big enough to really put the fear into all but the most confident players — regardless of what cards they're holding.

There's a significant advantage to playing this way, given that it's a very context-sensitive tactic so you won't be doing it repeatedly and labelling yourself as predictable, and that you're going to be able to make most players back down relatively quickly, ensuring you can rake in a few easy pots as the game or tournament continues.

Let's take a look at an example. These are good cards to start with, and at this point you've no idea what the flop will be, so you go in confident and make the bet.

Not a colossal one, but enough to show that you're confident in your cards. Then the flop comes in and it's all low cards that are of no use to you.

Show no fear, as now the continuation bet is placed — one significantly larger than your opening bet. Showing strength, in a variety of ways over the course of a game of poker , is very valuable to you because you're building a confident image of someone who bets well when the odds are in.

Of course, continuation betting on every single hand is going to let you down eventually as people will realise you're just taking risks in an effort to intimidate. But doing it when you've got a hand like the one above — strong, high cards but no pair — is wise as it's almost impossible that it'll happen every time you're dealt a pair of cards.

The only thing worth bearing in mind with a tactic like this is the huge amount of risk you're taking. As mentioned above, your continuation bet a chunk of your chips large enough to make it look like you've got serious faith in your hand plus your pre-flop bet means you are down a worrying amount of chips should someone call you on your bet with a better hand than yours.

It's a bold move, and one that you shouldn't be willing to make unless you can play as well short-stacked as you can when you've got a stack big enough to try a daredevil bluff like this one.

But when it works, it's like all moments in poker when you pull something off like you're a member of Ocean's Eleven. The continuation bet is a master bluffer's tool — make use of it. It's one of the first things you learn when playing tournament poker: don't bet into a dry side-pot. People say that if you and an opponent see the flop when a third player is all-in, you shouldn't normally bet - because it's more important to eliminate the all-in player than win a few extra chips.

This has become one a common fallacy in poker. In fact, there are many situations where it is correct to bet rather than attempt to knock out the third player. Let's look at some situations where it is correct to bet into a side-pot - and some where it's best to hang onto your chips.

First of all, let's talk about situations where this received wisdom is true. That is, when you shouldn't bet into a dry sidepot:. One situation is when you're in the bubble stages of a tournament or when you're at a stage in the tournament where there's about to be a significant jump in prize money.

Then, your primary goal is to eliminate players. That's because you make money every time a player is knocked out. For example, imagine you're in a tournament where 27 places are paid and 28 players remain.

If two of you are in the pot and another player is all-in you should do whatever is necessary to eliminate the opponent who is all-in. Usually, this means checking the hand down to give the maximum possible chance of eliminating the third player if your hand doesn't eliminate the all-in player, your opponent's hand might.

So, In general, you would only bet a very strong hand like a set, straight or flush - hands that are virtually guaranteed to win the pot. But had you had bet, you may not have eliminated the player - and may even have risked going out on the bubble yourself.

Obviously, this alternative costs you money in the long run and it's something you should avoid. It's clear that there are situations where you should not bet and should try to eliminate players instead.

However, the big mistake so many players make is to carry this advice over to all tournament situations, instead of just the specific ones it applies to.

They see this as universal advice because they don't fully understand the concepts behind it. Take the same situation, but now there are players remaining, again with 27 places paid. In this case, eliminating a player has almost no value whatsoever - there are no big money jumps or significant prize differences to worry about.

It's great if you send someone to the rail, but there will still be other players to eliminate before you make any real money. Consequently, you should make whatever play has the highest expected value at the time - your overall equity in the tournament is not yet important.

Often, this means protecting your hand by betting, regardless of whether there is a side pot. As you can see, poker isn't as simple as some would make it out to be. Generic advice like 'don't bet into a dry side pot in tournament poker' shouldn't be taken at face value, so the next time you hear Captain Casino and his re-buy army offering poker lessons like this at the table, think about what they are saying in more detail.

Try to work out if the underlying concepts are correct - and why - before applying them yourself. As this rule shows, received wisdom isn't always reliable.

In the late stages of the World Series of Poker Main Event, for example, a player going all-in is putting their tournament life on the line, with millions of dollars at stake.

The following clip illustrates just how quickly the pot can escalate in games with a no-limit betting structure. Pot-Limit Omaha is the second-most played poker game in the world.

Also known as PLO, this game is one of many poker variants that can be played with pot-limit betting rules. Unlike no-limit poker games, the maximum raise in a pot-limit game is equal to the size of the pot.

This sounds like a simple concept, but calculating the maximum possible raise with a pot-limit betting structure can be tricky. Betting the pot means placing a bet that's equal to the size of the pot, plus any outstanding bets, plus the amount you'd have to put in to call the last outstanding bet.

If you're first to act on any postflop street, betting the pot is simply betting the amount already in the pot. There are no bets or calls in front of you to calculate. Any bet or raise is limited to the number of chips in the pot at that time. This means that a player who raises may count as part of the pot the number of chips required for the player to call.

If there are six chips in the pot, and a bet of four is made, the total is 10 chips; it requires four chips for the next player to call, making 14; and the player may then raise by 14 chips. But even when the pot limit is played, there should be some maximum limit, such as 50 chips.

The limit for each player is the number of chips the player has in front of them. If the player has only 10 chips, they may bet no more than 10 and he may call any other player's bet to that extent.

In table stakes, no player may withdraw chips from the table, or return chips to the banker, until they leave the game. A player may add to their stack, but only between the deal just completed and the beginning of the next deal. In a fixed-limit game, it is often agreed that following any very good hand - a full house or better, for example - there will be one deal by each player of Jackpots, in which everyone antes double, and the betting limit is doubled for these deals as well.

A maximum limit is put on the number of chips any player may lose. Each takes out one stack at the start; if they lose that stack, the banker issues the player another, without charging for it, and in many cases, the player can get still a third stack free before dropping out of the game.

Some limit should be placed on the number of free stacks so that a player will have the incentive to play carefully. In these sessions, the "sky's the limit," but such games are rarely played today. In almost all games played today, there is a limit on the number of raises at each betting interval, and this limit is invariably three raises.

The players should first decide what form of Poker they will play. The main forms of Poker are Draw Poker and Stud Poker. In Draw Poker, all the cards are dealt face down to the players. In Stud Poker, some of the cards are dealt face up as the betting progresses, so that all of the other players get to see a part of each player's hands.

Unless the host, or the rule of a club, has already established the game, the players should first decide what form of Poker they will play. Two factors should influence their decision: the number of players, and whether the group has only experienced players or has some inexperienced players.

The following selections are recommended:. Usually, with so few players, only the very experienced play Draw Poker and they will often use a stripped deck, which is a pack with cards removed, such as all the deuces twos and treys threes.

More than 10 players: One of the games in which fewer than five cards are dealt, such as Three-Card Monte or Spit-in-the-Ocean. All of the Poker variations are described later in this chapter. Another alternative with so many players is to simply form two tables and organize two separate games.

When the Poker session is Dealer's Choice, each dealer has the privilege of naming the form of Poker to be played and to designate the ante, wild cards if any , and the maximum limit of chips that can be wagered during each round.

However, the dealer may not require one player to ante more than another. If a game such as Jackpots is selected and no one opens the betting, the same dealer deals again and everyone antes again. While most Poker purists choose to play with no wild cards, in many games, especially Dealer's Choice, various cards may be designated as wild.

A wild card is specified by the holder to be a card of any rank or suit, such as a fifth queen, or the card needed to combine with the other four in a player's hand to form a straight or a flush. Wild cards in a Poker game add variety, and of course, they greatly increase the chances of getting a rare combination such as a full house or a straight flush.

The usual choices for wild cards are as follows:. Note that most packs of cards include two jokers for use in such games as Canasta.

Poker players are increasingly adding one or both jokers as wild cards. This is the joker, but its wildness is limited: It counts as an ace; or as a card of any suit for making a flush; or as a card of any rank and suit for making a straight or straight flush.

Every two is wild. Sometimes the joker is included as a fifth wild card. Note that the number of wild cards in a hand does not diminish it in anyway; thus, with deuces wild, five of a kind comprised of 10, 10, 2, 2, 2 five 10s beats 8, 8, 8, 8, 2 five 8s.

The king of diamonds and the jacks of spades and hearts show only one eye, whereas the other face cards all have two eyes.

One-eyed jacks are sometimes designated as wild cards, but the king of diamonds is rarely selected to be wild. In Stud Poker, each player's lowest "hole" card that is, the lowest card that is dealt face down and not seen by the other players is wild.

In Draw Poker, the wild card would be the lowest card in a player's hand. When such a card is designated, it means that every card of that rank in that player's hand is wild, but the fact that a certain card is wild in one player's hand does not make that same rank of card wild in other players' hands.
